For years, backup data has been treated like an insurance policy — something you hope you never need, stored away and forgotten until disaster strikes. HYCU founder and CEO Simon Taylor thinks that’s a massive missed opportunity, and with the announcement of HYCU aiR, he may have just changed the data protection industry forever.
From Insurance to Healthcare
In a conversation with the hosts of Across the Tech Pond, Taylor described HYCU aiR as a fundamental shift in how organizations should think about their backed-up data. “We are moving the entire industry from insurance to healthcare,” he explained. Rather than simply recovering data after an incident, HYCU aiR allows organizations to actively interrogate that data in natural language — asking it questions, surfacing threats, and uncovering vulnerabilities that would otherwise remain invisible.
The premise is deceptively simple but genuinely powerful. HYCU’s existing platform already backs up and recovers data across more than 103 different SaaS applications, databases, and cloud environments — far more than any competitor, Taylor claims. That breadth of coverage means HYCU has effectively been building what he calls “an almost human brain” of an organization’s entire data history. HYCU aiR is the interface that finally lets you talk to it.
What Can You Actually Ask It?
The use cases Taylor outlined are compelling, particularly for security and compliance teams. Using HYCU aiR, organizations can run natural language queries such as:
“Run an insider threat analysis” — the platform cross-references HR systems like Workday, CRM data in Salesforce, identity and access management policies, and endpoint behavior to flag suspicious patterns across multiple systems simultaneously.
“Show me the blast radius of everything these three employees touched in the last 90 days” — automatically generating a visual map of every application and database accessed, helping security teams prioritize investigations.
“Where is my classified and unclassified data sitting?” — surfacing data classification and compliance exposure across the entire SaaS estate.

Why This Matters for the Mid-Market
Taylor was particularly direct about who stands to benefit most: mid-market companies with between 200 and 10,000 employees. These organizations face the same threat landscape as Fortune 500 enterprises but operate with a fraction of the security budget. A large enterprise CISO might layer in DSPM, UEBA, insider risk, and identity posture tools at a cost well north of half a million dollars a year — just for visibility, before a single byte is protected.
Mid-market IT and security teams, often numbering fewer than a dozen people, simply cannot afford that stack. What they can afford — and increasingly must invest in — is SaaS data protection. When asked what underpins the technology, Taylor pointed to something that many AI vendors overlook in their rush to deploy the latest large language model. “The LLMs are becoming commoditized,” he said. “The differentiation in future technology products is not going to be which model you use. It’s going to be access to a unique underlying data set.” HYCU’s argument is that eight years of investment in broad SaaS backup coverage has produced exactly that — a data asset that no competitor can quickly replicate, and that becomes dramatically more valuable when combined with AI-driven context switching and natural language querying.
The Bottom Line
Taylor’s closing message to organizations was characteristically direct: get your data backed up, make sure it is stored separately from production environments, and ensure you can actually recover it when something goes wrong. The fundamentals of data protection have not changed. What has changed is what you can now do with the data once it is protected.
