The latest Ollama releases (v0.18.1 through v0.18.2) bring a significant upgrade
for OpenClaw users: built-in web search and web fetch capabilities. Local models
can now access real-time information without leaving the OpenClaw environment.

## What is New

Ollama now ships with a web search plugin that plugs directly into OpenClaw is tool
ecosystem. When configured, OpenClaw can invoke Ollama is models to search the web
for current information and fetch readable content from pages. This bridges a key
gap for local LLM deployments: stale training data.

## How It Works

The integration provides two core capabilities:

 * **Web Search**: Models can issue search queries and receive up-to-date results
   for current events, documentation, and breaking news.
 * **Web Fetch**: Direct page fetching extracts readable content for processing—
   useful for ingesting documentation, articles, or release notes without manual
   copy-paste.

Notably, Ollama is implementation does **not** execute JavaScript. This keeps the
surface area minimal while still covering most static documentation and news sites.

## Setup Requirements

To enable web search in OpenClaw with Ollama, you need:

 * Ollama v0.18.1 or later
 * An authenticated Ollama account (`ollama signin`)
 * OpenClaw configured to use Ollama as the model provider

The authentication requirement applies specifically when using local models with
web search enabled. This likely ties to rate limiting and API key management for
the search backend.

## Running OpenClaw

To launch OpenClaw with a specific Ollama model:

    ```wp-block-code
    ollama launch openclaw --model llama3.2
    ```

Recent versions (v0.18.2+) also fix a bug where stale model fields were not properly
updated when the primary model changed, ensuring your selected model is actually
used.

## Why This Matters

Local LLMs traditionally suffer from knowledge cutoff dates. By adding web search,
Ollama+OpenClaw gives local models the same real-time awareness as cloud-based alternatives—
without sending all prompts to external APIs. This is particularly valuable for:

 * Air-gapped or privacy-sensitive environments
 * Research on fast-moving topics (security advisories, emerging tech)
 * Reducing API costs while maintaining utility
